How to Cancel 23andMe
Need to cancel your 23andMe+ Premium membership? This guide will walk you through the cancellation process step-by-step. We'll also cover how to delete your account and genetic data if needed.
Note: After canceling your membership, you'll retain access to 23andMe+ Premium features until the end of your current billing period. Your existing DNA results and ancestry reports will remain accessible. Canceling membership does not delete your genetic data - that requires a separate process.
Step 1: Log in to Your 23andMe Account
Log in to your 23andMe account at www.23andme.com.
Step 2: Locate Your Account Settings
Locate your Account Settings by clicking on your profile name in the upper right hand corner and selecting "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Access Personal Information
Scroll down to the section titled "Personal Information" and click "edit".
Step 4: Manage Membership
Locate the 23andMe+ Premium Membership information at the bottom of the page and click "Manage membership".
Step 5: Cancel Auto-Renewal
Select "Cancel auto-renewal" to cancel your membership. Your membership will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle.
Troubleshooting
- Make sure you're signed in to the correct 23andMe account
- Click on your profile name in the upper right hand corner and select "Settings" from the drop-down menu
- Scroll down to the section titled "Personal Information" and click "edit"
- Locate the 23andMe+ Premium Membership information at the bottom of the page
- Look for "Manage membership" button
- If you don't see membership options, you may not have an active 23andMe+ Premium membership
- Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again
Canceling membership is separate from deleting data. Follow the steps above to cancel auto-renewal. Your account and data will remain, but you'll lose access to premium features after your billing period ends.
- Check your email for the cancellation confirmation
- Verify the cancellation email shows the correct expiration date
- Make sure you selected "Cancel auto-renewal" to cancel your membership
- Contact 23andMe Support if charges continue after the cancellation date
Your DNA results and ancestry reports will remain accessible after canceling membership. However, you'll lose access to new premium health reports and features. If you delete your account, all data including DNA results will be permanently deleted.
The deletion process typically deletes your entire account including all data. If you have specific concerns about data retention, contact 23andMe Support for options.
If you purchased a prepaid bundle (kit + premium membership) without saving payment information, the membership may not auto-renew. Check your membership status in Settings. Some prepaid memberships cannot be canceled separately.
Additional Information
- Membership Cancellation: Only affects premium features and auto-renewal; does not delete your data
- Data Deletion: Requires separate process in Settings > 23andMe Data > Permanently Delete Data
- Refunds: No prorated refunds for partially used membership periods
- Email Confirmation: Required for both membership cancellation and account deletion
- Irreversible: Account and data deletion cannot be undone once confirmed
- Legal Retention: Some minimal information may be retained as required by law even after deletion
Conclusion
You've successfully canceled your 23andMe+ Premium membership! You'll continue to have access to premium features until the end of your current billing period. After that, you'll lose access to new premium health reports, but your existing DNA results and ancestry reports will remain accessible.
Your genetic data remains in your account unless you choose to delete it separately. If you need to delete your account and all genetic data, use the deletion process in Settings > 23andMe Data. If you need help, 23andMe Support is available through their Customer Care Center.
